It’s not unusual for a Shih Tzu to stare at their owner at home. Some dogs do it more often than others, and it often looks like they are waiting for something.

It’s easy to imagine why a loyal Shih Tzu stares at their owner so intensely—it seems like a sign of devotion. However, some dogs take it to the extreme, following their owner everywhere, staring at them as if they are holding a delicious treat like a piece of sausage.

The truth is, Shih Tzus love their owners, but when they stare at us with such anticipation, it usually isn’t because of deep devotion. Most of the time, they think they are about to get something. That “something” is often a tasty snack or treat.

However, Shih Tzus don’t always stare at their owners just for food. Sometimes, they are looking for other types of rewards, like attention, playtime, or even a walk.

They might also be seeking a kind word or a pat on the head. In some cases, especially if the dog is well-trained, they might be waiting for instructions or looking to understand what their owner wants by reading their facial expressions.

In any case, staring at the owner is generally a positive behavior. Many dog trainers encourage dogs to look at their owners before receiving a command, as it helps strengthen the bond between dog and owner. If you’ve never tried it, making eye contact with your dog can be a very special and enjoyable experience for both of you.

That being said, it’s important to remember that staring directly into a dog’s eyes can sometimes be seen as a challenge or threat, especially if the dog has aggressive tendencies.

Mutual eye contact should only happen when there’s a healthy relationship between the owner and the dog.

If your Shih Tzu constantly follows you around and stares at you, and you want to reduce this behavior, there are some tips to help.

For example, when your dog stares at you as if asking for food or treats, try ignoring them. Don’t give them any food, and don’t speak to them or even look at them. If they follow you around the house looking for attention, continue ignoring them—no pets, no cuddles, and no talking.

Over time, they may stop this behavior, but most owners find it endearing and don’t really want their little shadow to stop following them!
