- Shih Tzu
In seventh place on our list, the Shih Tzu is a dog breed originally from China. Like other canine breeds, this animal’s origin has a legend.
According to the story, the Shih Tzu would be a symbol of love between a Chinese princess and a Mongolian. That explains why it’s considered one of the cutest dogs in the world.
- Siberian Husky
Taking sixth place, the Siberian Husky breed is from Russia. These dogs have been known in Siberia for almost two thousand years, specially bred to pull sleds in extreme conditions by the Chukchi people.
- Alaskan Malamute
In fifth place, we chose the Malamute as one of the cutest dogs in the world. It’s a Nordic breed from the United States.
Considered ancient, its precise origin is unclear, although it’s known they were developed by Alaskan tribes for work.
- Samoyed
Our fourth place belongs to the Samoyed, a Russian breed. According to studies, this breed is one of the oldest, descending purely from dogs that accompanied migrations of the Samoyed tribes, who lived in Siberia and whose origins date back to prehistory.
Despite being domesticated, it’s a dog that fulfills its utility functions excellently, particularly as a guardian. When brought to England, they excelled in exhibition competitions.
- Shar Pei
Originally bred as a multipurpose farm dog, it’s considered efficient, with characteristics sought for such purposes achieved: it’s quiet enough to be a guard dog, for example.
Also considered a companion animal, it hasn’t lost its working traits, like its efficiency as a herding and tracking dog.
Physically, the shar-pei has a frowning expression and a mouth pigmented black, which, according to the Chinese, would ward off evil spirits, and the grandeur of its posture would show that it’s never been challenged.
- Chow Chow
Considered by many the most beautiful dog in the world, the Chow Chow takes second place on our list of the cutest dogs in the world. Its name literally means “puffy-lion dog.”
An ancient breed with an unknown origin, it’s supposed that its image was used for decorating objects during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE), and during the Tang Dynasty, one of the emperors had 2500 of these canines in his kennel. Historians speculate about crosses between mastiffs and spitzs.
- Pomeranian
Our grand champion is the Pomeranian breed, also known as Spitz, named after the Pomerania region in East Germany.
Historically, these animals arrived in Europe brought by the Vikings, first mentioned in German literature in 1450.
