The existence of brachycephalic dogs may be numbered as experts draw attention to the issue. The argument is that these pets suffer from various health problems, and for the well-being of the animals, it is ideal to stop breeding these breeds.
The Netherlands has recently prohibited the breeding of such dogs, including pugs, bulldogs, and Shih Tzus. The law came into effect on January 1st of this year. The regulation bans brachycephalic dogs with a muzzle shorter than one-third of the length of the skull.
These dogs are prone to respiratory, cardiac, and skin problems. The prohibition has pleased animal advocacy groups. The Netherlands was also the first country to remove all stray dogs from the streets.
Here is a list of the prohibited dog breeds:
- English Bulldog
- French Bulldog
- Pug
- Pekingese
- Boston Terrier
- Boxer
- Shih Tzu
- Lhasa Apso
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The ban does not apply to dogs that are already in existence. However, these pets cannot be used for breeding. “We have made the lives of innocent animals miserable simply because we thought they were ‘cute’ and ‘adorable.’ That’s why today we are taking a big step towards a Netherlands where no domestic animal has to suffer because of its appearance,” said the country’s Minister of Agriculture, Piet Adema, in a statement.
